Within the discovery field there are distinguished disseminated, medium-thick disseminated and massive ores.
The disseminated ores contain:
- up to 15% of barium and strontium oxides and are defined as poor in quality
- medium-disseminated ores contain from 15 to 20% of barium and strontium (of medium quality)
- thick disseminated ores contain from 20 to 30% (rich)
- and massive ores containing more than 30% of barium and strontium oxides are characterized as highly rich in ore quality.
What is Barite used for?
Applied as hardener for drilling solution, and different branches of industry: varnish paint, glass, on plastic production, friction materials, linoleum, gummy, isolation material, Ba salts, and as protection from ionized radiation, for example, X –rays rooms, for production of heavy grouting cement. Barite is also used as:
- filler, extender, weighting agent in paints, plastics, and rubber.
- automobile brake and clutch pads.
- automobile paint primer for metal protection and gloss.
- use as a weighting agent in rubber.

Barite Used In Healthcare
In the metal-casting industry, barite is part of the mold-release compounds. Because barite significantly blocks x-ray and gamma-ray emissions, it is used as aggregate in high-density concrete for radiation shielding around x-ray units in hospitals, nuclear powerplants, and university nuclear research facilities. Ultrapure barite is used as a contrast medium in x-ray and computed tomography examinations of the gastrointestinal tract.
Formation of Barite and Geology
Barite often occurs as concretions and void-filling crystals in sediments and sedimentary rocks. It is especially common as concretions and vein fillings in limestone and dolostone. Where these carbonate rock units have been heavily weathered, large accumulations of barite are sometimes found at the soil-bedrock contact. Many of the commercial barite mines produce from these residual deposits.
